Today’s beta confirmed BFN #20. I realize some of you may have way more than 20, and I just can’t imagine.
This cycle was a canceled IUI cycle, so I knew that just trying it on our own meant our odds were low. I didn’t respond well enough to Clomid for us to feel like the IUI would have provided an advantage. I did get a trigger shot and took Estrace and progesterone.
Yesterday, I took a HPT and wasn’t surprised when it showed a negative. Not surprised, but still frustrated and sad.
I know, I know, there’s a chance the HPT might not show an early pregnancy. But my doctor requires it because of the possibility that the HPT wasn’t sensitive enough. Plus, I would never forgive myself if I stopped my meds based on a negative HPT only to find out later on that a beta would’ve been positive. But it costs me $130 each time I have my blood drawn, so each beta is just salt in the wound.
Fortunately, I’m on vacation from work this week, so I have the time and space to process things this cycle.
Do you get a beta even if a HPT shows a negative?

I always hated that, stopping progesterone if I got a BFN without a beta. More times than not, I talked myself into calling and asking for a blood test. They never gave me any grief about it, but it wasn’t something they did automatically. I was always worried I would stop the meds too soon. I definitely preferred getting a beta on top of a negative HPT. I’m sorry you got another bfn 🙁
I’m so sorry for your BFN. Definitely take some time for yourself this week. 🙂
My clinic never does betas. They just have you wait the two weeks after the IUI or IVF and then test at home. They told me that the HPTs are accurate (enough) and because it was a publicly (government) funded clinic, betas would just cost too much if they did them on everyone. So, I’ve never had a beta… But I definitely understand the salt in the wound having to pay for a beta knowing it is already negative.
Thinking about you today girl! Trusting that the Lord’s timing is perfect for your baby 🙂
I’m so sorry. ((hugs))
My clinic does betas only after a +HPT and before starting a new treatment cycle (even after -HPT and a period). Of course, that’s just with TI and IUI; not sure what they do for IVF cycles.
Sorry about your BFN. On the funny side, the iPhone DOES have a pregnancy app; it’s like a breathalizer only it tells if you’re pregnant instead of being drunk.
Thank you to everyone for all the kind words and support. And Christina- that’s hilarious about the iPhone app.
