I’ve learned a lot during my battle with infertility, so I thought I’d pass along some of my favorite tips. Don’t believe for a minute that I’m an expert in all of these! I’m still working on them, and writing this list made me see where I still have work to do. But I hope you’ll find something here to help you in your journey.
- Be grateful for the strengths you’re developing
- Build stress-relieving habits like exercise or yoga
- Develop your patience
- Don’t feel guilty for skipping out on baby showers if that’s what you need to do to take care of yourself
- Don’t forget that infertility affects your spouse, too
- Don’t let social media bring you down
- Eat healthy
- Educate yourself about infertility myths and facts
- Find a community of other women going through infertility, either online or in-person
- Give grace to others when they say insensitive or ignorant things regarding infertility or pregnancy. Most people aren’t intentionally cruel
- Have faith that God’s plans are bigger and better than your dreams
- Keep an open mind about alternative treatments like acupuncture and Chinese medicine
- Know that God will use difficult situations to bring about good in your life
- Know that infertility does not define you
- Let yourself cry and grieve
- Look for the silver lining in your infertility
- Make sure you get medical information from credible online sources
- Memorize Scripture to remind you of God’s goodness and promises
- Nurture your marriage. Don’t let your relationship become all about conceiving.
- Plant your tears.
- Pray
- Read books that will help you understand the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of infertility
- Remember that God is with you even when you’re afraid
- Remind yourself that you are not alone in this journey
- Resist the urge to wallow in jealousy
- See a professional counselor or therapist to help you process your emotions
- Set realistic goals for yourself, especially during treatments cycles
- Share your story– even if it’s just with one person
- Spend time with your pets
- Start a blog to chronicle your journey
- Take a break from treatments or trying if it begins to be too consuming
- Try not to be afraid of injectable medications. I promise you the anticipation is the worst part.
