This Sunday, July 27 is Official Auntie’s Day™.
According to Savvy Auntie, “Auntie’s Day is a time to thank, honor and celebrate the aunt in a child’s life, whether she is an Auntie by Relation (ABR), Auntie by Choice (ABC), or godmother, for everything she does for a child not-her-own. While all aunts are celebrated on this day, the day is especially poignant to one in five American women who identify as PANKs®, or Professional Aunts No Kids. PANKs self-identify as childless or childfree and have a bond with at least one child by relation or by friendship.”
I’m pretty sure that this describes most my female readers, so I thought it would be appropriate to celebrate Auntie’s Day here on the blog, too.
When I was a child, I’d visit my grandparents every other Sunday afternoon. My aunt Marie and my two uncles (her brothers) would pick me up after church, bring me a McDonald’s Happy Meal, take me to my grandparents’ house and spend the rest of the day with me playing Barbie and Nintendo, doing crafts, playing games, and watching TV. This continued until I was 12 years old and moved out-of-state.

Me & my Aunt Marie
I didn’t realize until I was an adult how exhausting this must have been for all of them and just how much time they devoted to me. The memories I have of those times are some of the happiest ones from my childhood.

No iPhones back then!
My aunt never had children of her own, and she died relatively young from kidney disease almost six years ago. So I wanted to honor her today by encouraging all of you to thank a special auntie you might have in your life, and to spend some time with your nieces and nephews.
Savvy Auntie has some wonderful ideas for activities to do with your nieces and nephews, and they also have eCards you can send to your special auntie!
Happy Auntie’s Day to all of you!
