I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Michelle & Chris Miller, authors of the new book, Where Have All the Storks Gone? A His and Hers Guide to Infertility. They were kind enough to send me a copy of the book to review and offer another one as a giveaway prize for one lucky reader.
Where Have All the Storks Gone? is different from other infertility memoirs I’ve read in that Michelle and Chris take turns recalling their story- all the way from when they met through the birth of their first child after IVF. I really enjoyed how they shared a bit of their story from before infertility because it made me feel like I got to know them– not just their infertility experience.
I also loved how they mixed humor and education together. For example, anyone who’s experienced an awkward few minutes of silence during a vaginal ultrasound would giggle at Michelle’s description of the first time she had one: “…[she] inserts a lubricated wand up there, wiggles it around a bit, strikes a few keys on the keyboard (snapping pictures? Facebooking?), and after a few minutes, she’s finished.” Speaking from experience- I know that’s a hilariously accurate portrayal of what happens during the procedure.
Despite their humor, Michelle and Chris don’t gloss over the difficult times they experienced. They write honestly and transparently about the challenges they faced- failed IUIs, fibroid surgery, and miscarriage, to name a few.
I really appreciated the three appendices they included at the end of the book. One is a glossary of the infertility terms and lingo used throughout the book (this will be SO helpful for people still new to infertility). The second is some information about fibroids, and the third is information on semen analyses.
If you’re interested in hearing the experience of a couple who’s been through almost everything in infertility-land, I highly recommend Where Have All the Storks Gone? It’s available in paperback on Amazon. You can also find out more about Michelle and Chris and their book on their website, StorkParenting.
