“Do not look to your hope, but to Christ, the source of your hope.”- Spurgeon
I recently came across this quote by the 19th-century theologian, Charles Spurgeon, and it made me think. So often in the infertility community we say things like, “Have hope,” or “Keep hope,” or “Don’t give up hope.”
There’s nothing wrong with any of those things, but I want to challenge those of us who claim faith in Christ to encourage each other to focus not just on hope, but the source of our hope: Jesus. Just as a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, our hope can only be as strong as the One in whom it’s based.
We put our hope in the Lord. He is our help and our shield. – Psalm 33:20
And so, Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in you.– Psalm 39:7
Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again— my Savior and my God!– Psalm 42:11
Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him. – Psalm 62:5
When we look to Jesus as the source of our hope, we orient ourselves to focus not only on earthly hope for children, but on the eternal hope He gives. He promises us a future, not just here on earth, but with Him in heaven forever.
So next time we say, “Have hope,” let’s also remember who our hope is from.
What do you think about the idea of focusing on the source of our hope, rather than hope itself? Please share your thoughts in the comments below.
