The Lord is my light and my salvation— so why should I be afraid? The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble? When evil people come to devour me, when my enemies and foes attack me, they will stumble and fall. Though a mighty army surrounds me, my heart will not be afraid. Even if I am attacked, I will remain confident.- Psalm 27:1-3 (NLT)
During the next four days, we’ll be looking at Psalm 27 and by the end of four days, we’ll have written out the entire chapter. I don’t know about you, but there’s something very exciting and anticipatory to me about taking the time to write out an entire chapter!
Psalm 27 is an expression of affection and devotion towards God, especially in times of trouble. It was written by King David and tells of his desire to be with God, his hope in God, and encourages us to seek the same devotion.
As we read the first three verses today, we see that David is experiencing an intense time of struggle. He is being attacked and pursued by enemies, and an entire army is surrounding him. Yet even with the threat of physical harm, David remains courageous and confident.
Infertility has probably not brought literal armies to our front doors, but I don’t think anyone would consider it an exaggeration to say that infertility can feel like a physical attack. Our bodies feel broken and defective. We experience physical pain from our symptoms, our treatments, or both.
But David reminds us that God is our light. Just as it does in other verses, the word “light” in verse one symbolizes well-being and life. It is in direct contrast to the darkness the enemy tries to bring upon us. When we place ourselves in the light of God (by reading His Word and spending time with Him), our fear gets transformed into courage and our weakness into confidence.
With God as our Light, we have nothing to fear!
