Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory. We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love. – Romans 5:1-5 (NLT)
Infertility is filled with disappointment. Our bodies disappoint us. Our treatments disappoint us. Maybe we feel disappointed with ourselves or our marriages for not handling the stresses better.
But Romans 5:5 reminds us that there is a hope that will not disappoint. Our hope in our salvation is sure!
So how do we get that hope to settle in our hearts? I don’t really like the answer, but one way is by walking through problems and trials. Romans 5:3-5 show us the progression how trials and troubles can bring hope into our lives: trials help us develop endurance, endurance helps us develop strength of character, and character makes our hope stronger!
Every sorrow we taste will one day prove to be the best possible thing that could have happened to us. We will thank God endlessly in heaven for the trials that he sent us here. – Joni Eareckson Tada
Our troubles are not in vain! One of the purposes they have in our lives is to give us stronger hope in Christ! What a beautiful gift.
