Give thanks to him alone who does mighty miracles. His faithful love endures forever. Give thanks to him who made the heavens so skillfully. His faithful love endures forever. Give thanks to him who placed the earth among water. His faithful love endures forever. Give thanks to him to made the heavenly lights- His faithful love endures forever. the sun to rule the day, His faithful love endures forever. and the moon and stars to rule the night. His faithful love endures forever. – Psalm 136:4-9 (NLT)
Each of us going through infertility is hoping for our little miracle. When the waiting gets long and hoping gets hard, we try many things in hopes of bringing our miracle sooner.
We take different supplements.
We go to acupuncture.
We fly across the country or even across the world to visit a “better” doctor.
We change our diets and our level of physical activity.
Don’t get me wrong- I don’t think there’s anything wrong with doing those things. I’ve done many of them myself. The Bible is full of instances where God works through people and uses their choices to bring about His purposes and His plans.
The problem arises when we begin to think that these things will be the cause of our miracle when and if it comes.
Verse 4 explicitly tells us that God alone does mighty miracles: “Give thanks to him alone who does mighty miracles.”
Supplements, exercise, diets and acupuncture may help prepare our bodies and minds for the miracle God will perform, but they do not cause the miracles to happen.
Our RE may be the person God has chosen to physically combine sperm and egg for you, but only God can cause fertilization, implantation and continued growth.
When we doubt God’s ability to work miracles, we only need to look at His creation to see proof of that (verses 5-9). The stars, the sun, the ocean and the daily process of day-turning-into-night-turning-back-into-day prove to us His power over the elements.
If He has power over nature, surely He has power over our bodies. Even if His miracles don’t come in the timing and form we are hoping for, we can rejoice and give thanks over the fact that while we cannot control what our bodies are doing (or not doing) when it comes to conceiving, our bodies are not out-of-control. They are under the authority of His mighty hand.
