I will exalt you, my God and King, and praise your name forever and ever. I will praise you every day; yes, I will praise you forever. Great is the Lord! He is most worthy of praise! No one can measure his greatness. – Psalm 145:1-3 (NLT)
The final few chapters of Psalm are all Psalms of praise, and I want our final few days of the 31 Days of Scripture During Infertility series to be focused on praise, too. So I’ve chosen Psalm 145 as our last major Scripture passage.
We’ve looked at several Psalms throughout this series and you may have noticed that they each come back to praise. The same should be said of us: we should always center our lives around praise.
The first three verses give us a framework for what our praise should look like:
Personal praise
When we look at the first verse, we see that David considers the Lord to be his personal God and King. He is not some vague deity with whom he has no personal relationship. He calls Him “my” God and King. Matthew Henry’s Commentary says that the repetition of praise we see in this verse (“I will exalt you…[I] will praise your name”) “[expresses] the fervency of [David’s] affection towards blessing God.” In other words, David enjoyed praising God.
Daily praise
In verse 2, David commits to a practice of daily praise. This is something we should seek to imitate in our own lives. This does not mean we have to attend a worship service every day or sing hymns every morning. However, we should daily acknowledge God’s greatness and His goodness by speaking favorably of Him.
In the next phrase, David alludes to the fact that in heaven, we will praise God every day for all eternity. Practicing daily praise here on earth is a wonderful way to prepare for our eternal future.
Enthusiastic praise
It may feel hard to praise God some days. But there is always something for which we can be honestly and authentically thankful- even if it’s only that our trials will not always be this bad! Even if the only thing we can honestly praise God for is the fact that we don’t understand Him (“No one can measure His greatness.”)- we can still praise Him for that!
So even in the midst of the trials and troubles of infertility, let us live a life of personal, daily, and enthusiastic praise unto God.
