There are lots of blog posts and articles about what NOT to say to someone struggling with infertility. But sometimes it’s hard to come up with a sentiment that conveys your care but doesn’t sound trite or cliche. Here are 15 suggestions:
I am so sorry you’re going through this.
I don’t know what it’s like, but I care about you and what you’re going through.
I’m thinking about you and sending prayers / good thoughts / good vibes.
I’m here for you.
I love you.
I hate that you have to go through this.
I know today might be rough for you. I wanted to let you know I’m thinking of you. {Use this on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, a due date after a miscarriage, or any other difficult day or anniversary}
I really don’t have the right words to say to you. I just want you to know I care.
Faith-based Sentiments
Be aware that these might be offensive to people who don’t share your faith. I usually only say these to people who I know share the same beliefs as me. Even then, I tread lightly because I know a lot of people struggle with their faith during infertility and might consider these cliches or platitudes.
I pray you feel God’s comfort and presence.
May God give you strength and hope.
I’m praying for you. {Then make sure you actually pray}.
Someone Going Through Treatment
I’d like to bring you a meal / help you with a chore / run an errand for you. When would be best for you? {Be aware they may have dietary restrictions}
I’d be happy to go to an appointment with you if your husband/spouse/partner ever can’t make it.
{For someone who has older kids} If you need someone to watch your child during your appointment, please let me know.
Would it be okay if I ask how things are going, or would you rather talk about it in your own timing?
What do you think of these 15 things to say to someone who is struggling with infertility? Do you have any of your own you’d like to add? Feel free to share in the comments.
