Every once in a while, I like to highlight some new and new-ish books that might be helpful for anyone experiencing infertility, miscarriage, or baby loss. I haven’t read these books, so this isn’t a recommendation list, but I just wanted to share what’s out there with you!
Miscarriage & Baby Loss
Made for a Different Land: Eternal Hope for Baby Loss by Lianna Davis.
Amazon’s Description: “Having children miscarried, stillborn, and lost in infancy, the author and contributors have experienced the testing, consuming shock of grief. Together, they seek to become less private with their loss experiences in order to testify with emotionally rich and honest expressions as to how knowing Christ has breathed eternal hope into their hollowest days. In Scripture, they see a God who is both familiar with sorrow and powerfully able to form pain into his glorious purposes. Even amidst the intensity of loss, they greatly rejoice in the better, heavenly country for which their children were made.”
Our Heaven Baby: A Children’s Book on Miscarriage and the Hope of Heaven by Leah Vis
Amazon’s Description: “Miscarriage is extremely heartbreaking for parents, but children often don’t experience it with the same intensity. A mother and father begin bonding with the baby immediately, but pregnancy is a very abstract concept for children to grasp. Even as adults we remain amazed at the miracle of pregnancy. So when a baby dies in miscarriage, we can tell our kids what happened. And then it is an amazing opportunity to take this opportunity to dream with them about heaven. Start imagining, and let the hope trickle in over your family.”
Grief & Disappointment
God Can’t: How to Believe in God and Love after Tragedy, Abuse, and Other Evils by Thomas Jay Ord
Amazon’s Description: “In God Can’t, Oord gives a plausible reason why some are healed but many others are not. God always works to heal everyone, but sometimes our bodies, organisms, or other creatures do not cooperate with God’s healing work. Or the conditions of creation are not right for the healing God wants to do.”
It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way: Finding Unexpected Strength When Disappointments Leave You Shattered by Lysa TerKeurst
Amazon’s Description: “Life often looks so very different than we hoped or expected. Some events may simply catch us off guard for a moment, but others shatter us completely. We feel disappointed and disillusioned, and we quietly start to wonder about the reality of God’s goodness. Lysa TerKeurst understands this deeply. But she’s also discovered that our disappointments can be the divine appointments our souls need to radically encounter God.”
Hope and Faith
Afraid of All the Things: Tornadoes, Cancer, Adoption, and Other Stuff You Need the Gospel For by Scarlet Hiltibidal
Amazon’s Description: “Seeing life in light of the cross will help you avoid fear, overcome fear when you can’t avoid it, and live beyond fear when you don’t overcome it. You don’t have to be afraid of all the things.”
In the Middle of the Mess: Strength for This Beautiful, Broken Life by Sheila Walsh
Amazon’s Description: “In her long-awaited new book, Sheila Walsh equips women with a practical method for connecting with God’s strength in the midst of struggle. From daily frustrations that can feel like overwhelming obstacles to hard challenges that turn into rock-bottom crises, women will find the means to equip themselves for standing strong with God. Using the spiritual applications of confession, prayer, and meditation on Scripture to form a daily connection to Jesus, women will learn how to experience new joy as a child of God who is fully known, fully loved, and fully accepted.”
